RETIRED RACEHORSES

Many ex-racehorses go on to be retrained for a new career outside racing. Post-racing careers include point to pointing, showjumping, showing or in some cases being taken on as pets!

If you have owned an ex-racehorse from the yard we would love to hear from you and we will include your story in this section of the website.

She was sold out of the yard in February 2022.

Banny's Lad

15 year old chestnut gelding

Sire: Osorio
Dam: Skytrial

Foaled: 2009

Races: 24. Wins: 3, 2nd: 2, 3rd: 3

Banny's Lad was bought from Tattersalls December Foals Sale in 2009. Bred for jumping, he was broken in and then enjoyed life in the fields until it was time for him to come in for Point-to-Point training with Steph Easterby at the end of 2013.

He made his Point-to-Point debut at Sheriff Hutton in 2014, winning on the line! He went on to win two more Points at Sheriff Hutton before progressing to running under rules.

In February 2016 he made his hurdles debut at Catterick and was placed in his first two starts over timber. Banny's Lad won for the first time over hurdles at Newton Abbot in July 2016, making a 650 mile round trip to the Devon track.

He progressed to fences and was a winner in February 2017 at Sedgefield ridden by Jake Greenall and back at the same course he won again in May for Harry Bannister.

Banny's Lad was retired at the start of 2019 and will spend his retirement as a hunter.

Itlaaq

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Alhaarth
Dam: Hathrah

Foaled: 2006

Races: 82. Wins: 9, 2nd: 2, 3rd: 9

Itlaaq was formerly trained by John Dunlop. He is a dual winner at our local course, York, which we always like to see! Itlaaq won his first race for us at York in July 2011, completing a double on the card after Hoof It's victory. In 2014 he won at Doncaster and York. He was off the track in 2015 but came back into training in 2016 and was a very popular winner at Doncaster in June for Danielle Mooney. The decision to bring him back into training was the right one, as Itlaaq was a winner again at Thirsk in July for Danielle.

Always a horse to go well for a lady rider Itlaaq teamed up with Serena Brotherton in 2018 to win three times, taking the Ladies Derby at Ripon and also winning at Musselburgh and Windsor.

He lived at the yard from the age of a few days old, and captured the hearts of the staff and became known as 'George'.

Pronghorn ran three times on the flat, at Ripon, York and Catterick but didn't quite have the speed needed to win. He was sold out of the yard in November 2019 and will follow a dressage career.

Day Of The Eagle

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Danehill Dancer
Dam: Puck's Castle

Foaled: 2006

Races: 48. Wins: 8, 2nd: 1, 3rd: 6

Eagle arrived at Sheriff Hutton in 2012 to run in the colours of Steve Hull. He won his first race for us at Chester in July that same year. He was a 2013 winner at Newcastle and then a winner three times in 2015, at Hamilton Park, Wolverhampton and Newcastle. Eagle was very easy to spot as he didn't have a tail!

We called time on the Eagle's career after he fell out of love with racing. He refused to go into the stalls and it was his way of telling us that enough was enough.

Upon retirement Eagle has taken up a new career racing but without the need for stalls. The story goes that in his first race his owner fastened a tail on him, and it came off in the race, which scared the other runners!

Bright Sparky

99 year old chestnut gelding

Sire: Dashing Blade
Dam: Braissim

Foaled: 2003

Races: 59. Wins: 6, 2nd: 7, 3rd: 3

I purchased Bright Sparky as a yearling in 2004 from Tattersalls Autumn Sales. He was actually bred in Germany out of a mare called Braissim, an unraced daughter of Dancing Brave. His sire, Dashing Blade, was a dual Group 1 winner having won the Gran Premio D'italia Trofeo Saima in Italy and the National Stakes at the Curragh, as well as being placed in Group 1 company in Munich.

He was a lovely looking chestnut yearling with a big white face and we brought him back to Sheriff Hutton and put him into training to run on the flat in 2005, once he'd been gelded. He was to run in the colours of Graham Sparkes, so you can work the name out for yourself.

Bright Sparky started in maiden company and was progressively upped in trip to tackle hurdles. However, he remained a maiden throughout his two and three year old seasons before winning his first race at Musselburgh in January 2007, a novice handicap hurdle, for jockey Tom Greenall.

Like so many horses the first win was the key and he won again at Catterick in March, Tom again the successful jockey. The handicapper took a dim view and he was given a jumps rating of 101 for his troubles!

His hurdles mark was a marked contrast to his rating of 50 on the flat, and 2008 saw him run both on the all-weather and over hurdles before we decided to send him over fences.

Bright Sparky's chase debut came at Sedgefield in November 2008, trailing in second last ridden by Tom's brother, Oliver Greenall. Two more runs over fences followed without success before we switched him back to the flat to exploit his lowly mark of 48.

Oliver rode him on his flat comeback and he duly obliged in an Amateur Riders Handicap at Southwell in February, first time blinkers helping sharpen him up.

Back over fences, Sparky was a rare runner for us at Fakenham and it didn't end well, crashing out at the tenth. However, back over fences at Bangor later that year Sparky recorded his first and only steeplechase win, a 12 length victory at odds of 25/1.

This versatile horse was an owner's dream, he'd won on the flat, over hurdles and over fences. February 2010 came round and it was time to exploit his flat mark of 46, Serena Brotherton this time the successful jockey at Wolverhampton. Sparky only ran on the flat in 2010, and despite plenty of second places it was another year before he scored on the flat again in what proved to be his last victory.

After two more second places, Sparky took a crashing fall over timber at Huntingdon. It seemed to knock his confidence and after six more races, in which he was convincingly beaten each time, we decided to retire him.

Sparky's final career stats showed 59 races with six wins and ten places. He won on the flat, over hurdles and over fences.

His racing days behind him, Sparky set off on a new career path at a fantastic new home, spending his next few years hacking round the countryside and beaches of Dorset.

Sparky is now looked after by Kelly Ford, and they're regulars on the show circuit together. Sparky qualified for the Aintree finals at novice class in his first season.

Kelly keeps in touch with us and everyone can follow Sparky on his very own Facebook page!

Flight Wish

Ginger's Lad

99 year old chestnut gelding

Sire: Elmaamul
Dam: Chadwick's Ginger

Foaled: 2004

Races: 45. Wins: 2, 2nd: 6, 3rd: 11

Ginger's Lad was bred by Bill Tinning, and came to us to start a national hunt career. He finished down the field in bumpers and novice hurdles, but came into his own when he started jumping fences. After being placed in handicap chases he won his first race at Sedgefield in May 2010 ridden by Brian Hughes. More places followed before a second career win at Southwell in May 2011, this time ridden by Jake Greenall. Despite running consistently Ginger's Lad was not to win again and after running at Bangor in September 2013 he was retired from racing.

A horse with huge potential to perform outside of racing, he was taken on by New Beginnings, a wonderful charity which retrains ex-racehorses. He was to be known as 'Jack' and after a successful period of retraining he was rehomed with Mark Holmes.

Mark now takes up Jack's story.

"I got Jack through New Beginnings in Nov 2015. In which time we have done a bit of everything hunted, Sj, evented, dressage and showing. Last year he qualified for the RoR BE90 Grassroots Championship.

This year he has qualified for the RoR three phase challenge final, RoR BE Champs at 90 and 100 and got 7th at the GYS Retrained Racehorse class.

I'm hoping to run him at BE Novice by the end of the season and do Cuddy Workers in the future with him.

He just the best thing since sliced bread. I met both the Tinnings and Max who use to ride him out both were so pleased for him and said what a special horse he was, I couldn't agree more with them, top boy".

A horse that is known for winning on special occasions, in May 2018 he gave amateur rider Alex Fielding his first winner on the flat when he came home in front at York.

Evans Wood

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Gentleman's Deal
Dam: Boulevard Rouge

Foaled: 2007

Races: 4. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 1

Evans Wood was bred by the late Ken Hodgson. He was by Winter Derby winner Gentleman's Deal out of Boulevard Rouge, and a half brother to five times winner Ego Trip. Running in the colours of Mr Curran, he raced four times, being placed on his debut at Huntingdon.

Evans Wood was retired in 2011 and in early 2020 we were contacted by Kimberley Marshall, who owned Evans Wood in his career after racing.

Here Kimberley takes up the story.

"I was very lucky to come across Evans Wood (by Gentleman's Deal) late in 2013, all much by chance! He was with Gary Parsonage at the time. Gary had seen me ride and said he had a horse he didn't have time to settle and thought we would suit one another. Had he said quite how long he would take to settle I may have thought twice!!"

"But he was everything Gary said and more, he really was my horse of a life time, beautiful inside and out. He won hearts and prizes everywhere we went (as long as I could get him to the fence!) competing in BE, BD and ROR."

"Unfortunately he was just not himself last season we investigated and tried what we could for him but in the end I had to make the heartbreaking but right decision to put him to sleep early last December".

"Thank you to yourself and his racing owners for making the chance of such an amazing horse possible."

After 611 days off the track Saints And Sinners won at Newcastle in December 2017 over two and a half miles ridden by Harry Bannister.

Saints And Sinners retired from racing in 2017 as a six times winner and has been enjoying his time as a hunter.

Sneak The Peek

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Heeraat
Dam: Ardbrae Tara

Foaled: 2017

Races: 4. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 1

Sneak The Peek is a lovely gelding by Heeraat. He ran four times on the flat as a three year old, finishing third at Leicester on his second outing.

However, we decided that he didn’t quite have the speed to win on the flat and was retired in September 2020 and it was time to find him a new career out of racing.

A lovely calm and gentle horse with a gorgeous temperament he ticked every box to make someone a fun horse. A lovely lady by the name of Dawn approached us looking for an ex-racehorse out of training and she immediately fell in love with ‘Sneaky’ and he left the stables in October for his new life in East Anglia.

Sneaky has now gained the name ‘Dream Boy’ as Dawn says that he is her dream come true and everything she ever wished for in a horse. It took Dawn a little time to find the right food for Sneaky, but he is now looking a million dollars on pure feed and also grass in the paddock. He can often be seen hacking around the lanes and bridleways accompanied by Dawn and her grand-daughter. The plan is to perhaps do a little jumping with him in time.

We wish Dawn and Sneak The Peak many happy years together and it has been wonderful to catch up with our former racehorse as he thrives in his new career.

99 year old grey gelding

Sire: Muhtarram
Dam: Heaven-Liegh-Grey

Foaled: 2001

Races: 9. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

Luke Sharp ran three times for us in 2005, but didn't make the frame. After his racing career he went to spend his retirement with Angela Thom, who gave him a wonderful home! He has purely been used as pleasure riding horse, and he is totally unflappable in traffic. Unfortunately he had awful injury to his hind leg seven months after buying him which prevented any showing and ROR, but Angela says that he he owes her nothing!!

Nayessence

99 year old chestnut gelding

Sire: Nayef
Dam: Fragrant Oasis

Foaled: 2006

Races: 21. Wins: 2, 2nd: 1, 3rd: 0

Nayessence made his debut at York in 2008. His confidence was knocked on his third racecourse appearance when he fell at Chester and it took him a while to get his head in front. In April 2010 he won twice in the space of sixteen days at Wolverhampton, both wins coming over a mile and a half. He seemed to save his best form for under the lights at Dunstall Park. However, he appeared to struggle afterwards and was retired the following year. He went on to hunt in his retirement and became a lovely riding horse. Nayessence still lives at the yard and he regularly ridden out by Caroline Bartram.

Caroline takes up the story .....

Nayessence has been hunting since his retirement.

He jumps massive hedges every weekend and is absolutely fearless and has been hunted by everyone including Jake Greenall who jumped him around the infamous Leppington hedges of Annie Henson's (I did the same with him but I ended up landing in one with him staring at me wondering how I ended up inside the hedge!)

He is a pleasure to hack out and we go exploring all over Mick's vast tracks of land and he's happy to pop any ditch or hedge or log we need to get where we're going.

Nayessence's best friend is Macleod and they're rarely parted from each other in the hunt field.

He's an absolute pleasure to have around but may be trying to cope with a small addiction to the white stuff (polos) which he always manages to snuffle out of your pocket. He loves attention and could stand being groomed and petted all day long.

Liverpool

99 year old brown gelding

Sire: Platini
Dam: Lerida

Foaled: 2002

Races: 6. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

Joanna Mason's first hand story of Liverpool (GER).

Liverpool was given to me after he ran a few times over hurdles and was unplaced. Grandad thought he'd be good to have a play with.

After a couple of years pointing and two winners, for which I rode him, he retired due to injury.

We decided to hunt him and I also started doing the racehorse showing classes. He just excelled, his racing record was history and he was in his element showing winning everything from Lincolnshire show and Yorkshire county show and many more qualifying for the championships at Hickstead and HOYs qualifier and was one of 12 of the top horse retained racehorses in the country to compete at HOYs.

Last year after breaking my back he was the first horse I sat on after 5 weeks and decided I wanted to do something different, that was to ride sidesaddle. He was like a duck to water and we competed at the Great Yorkshire show, placed 4th on our first outing (1 place of qualifying for HOYs).

In 2015 he also won a few prestigious awards. The Retraining Of Racehorses "Horse of the Year" award for his versatility and he received special recognition at the Godolphin awards evening.

He's still going strong and is a regular on the show circuit and his winning record has continued in 2017.

A new career was found for 'Bobby' in the East Riding with Alison Turner. He's now enjoying a wonderful life as a riding horse, doing some low level dressage and a bit of riding club when time allows.

A big thank you to Alison Turner for the update and photo.

He was a natural in his new discipline and after just a few months of retraining he was ready to compete. Pitkin is enjoying his new job and his owner tells us that the horse enjoys the competition again!

Oneforthenotebook ran three times for us, but did not stay two miles. Retired from racing he developed into an extremely good event horse, winning at intermediate level, but also having really good form at advanced level.

"He is a horse that I am very proud of breeding", says breeder Albertine barker. "although not as proud as I am of his half sister Diavoleria!!"

The photo shows Oneforthenotebook ridden by Tim Rusbridge, competing in the CCI3* at Blenheim Palace in 2015, where he went clear cross country and only had one down showjumping.

Restive

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Rip Van Winkle
Dam: I Hearyou Knocking

Foaled: 2013

Races: 6. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

Restive joined us in September 2020, as a previous seven times winner.

Although working well on the gallops he had simply fallen out of love with racing and after half a dozen runs it was decided to retire him and find him a new career.

We had to look up ‘horseball’ when an enquiry came in from Ben Berry of the Derby Horseball Club who was keen to retrain the eight-year-old gelding to play the sport.

For the uninitiated, and that included us, horseball is an exciting horseback combination of rugby, basketball, hockey, soccer, and Harry Potter's magical game Quidditch. Each team has six members, including four active players on the field and two substitute players. Players may only hold the ball for 10 seconds before passing it to a team member. After at least three passes between three different players, the player with the ball may shoot at the hoop and score a goal. The team with the most goals scored at the end of the 20-minute game wins.

Restive was a complete natural, and astounded everyone by how quick he was to progress from racehorse to horseball and within months he was not just competing, but he was actually winning.

Away from sport Restive is much loved by the family who adore him, and he is a very special horse having had a successful career on the track and now on the horseball field.

Farlington

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Sans Frontieres
Dam: Fake Tan

Foaled: 2016

Races: 1. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

Farlington is a very impressive stamp of a horse. He ran several times in Point-to-Points before he was offered for sale. We knew he had enormous potential as an eventer, the simple reason for his sale was that he wasn’t a racehorse. Out of racing, Farlington’s talents would soon come to the fore.

He was purchased by Marie Elizabeth Wilson and here she takes up the story.

It all started from losing my thoroughbred Duncan at 29 years old. I convinced myself that I could cope without another thoroughbred (and be happy with only my other horse a cob x sport horse) but after 6 months I started to look and my yard owner found Farlington (AKA Frankie). I looked at the videos and pictures and mulled it over and thought no harm in going to see/try him and when Mick and the trainer brought him in I got a lump in my throat as he had the same markings and kind eye my other one had but tried to push them out of my mind and watch him be ridden and ride him myself, oh boy once I sat on him he just knew he was the one, even more so once I had ridden him around then once I dismounted he followed me then I knew he had found me and I had found him we were right for each other but I still told myself to sleep on it to make sure.

I couldn’t get him out of my head and decided to buy him and he has been one of the best decisions I have ever made Frankie is so loving and kind and takes everything on Baird and learns so easily.

But come August 2020 we were hit with the EHV virus and had to be locked down Frankie became ill along with some others horse on our yard but he’s come through it with excellent vet care and all the yards care.

I then become seriously ill with COVID-19 and it has attacked my heart and during this time Frankie has been an angel as I couldn’t ride due to breathlessness and chest pain we have done loads of ground work and he has took this all on board, he has learnt to just stand still when I get off and untack him (no need to tie-up), he stands at the mounting block quietly until I am on board, understands voice commands (walk, trot, canter) on the lunge I know this wasn’t what we had planned for the past year I had hoped we would be out competing at least at unaffiliated show jumping and cross-country but due to health reasons we have took this year to bond from the ground up.

Frankie has just come back from my friend who breaks in and re-backs horses and after a couple of weeks told me to come and get him as he was an angel and all the work I had put in (and the fantastic work he had already received from yourself before purchase) he was one of the nicest horses and there was not anything he needed to work on.

Frankie has just had his first saddle fitted today and stood like and angel whilst different ones were tried on and the saddle fitter commented on how well behaved he was for his age. The saddle fitter weigh taped him and he is a good 525kg.

I credit his temperament and kind nature to yourselves for giving him the best start possible and Frankie will be with me for life. He is an important part of the family (I have two horses, Frankie and Music, and my daughter has two horses, Rou and Rhona).

Frankie had big shoes to fill and he fills them very well I believe horses always find there owners and that’s what Frankie did with me hopefully this year we can get fitter (that’s the both of us) and we will be out there competing hopefully in the autumn.

He has the life of a king, he’s out 24/7 at the moment and on one meal a day of top spec balancer, fibre mash and chaff (he’s a bloody messy eater has it all over the place and his nose he stole my heart that first day I saw him and knew he had to be mine he’s just so loving and wouldn’t hurt a fly such a softie.

I just can’t thank you all enough for letting me be his new owner!

Snake Rave

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Taipan
Dam: Raveleen Rose

Foaled: 2002

Races: 16. Wins: 0, 2nd: 3, 3rd: 3

Snake Rave ran several times for us under rules and also in point to points, where he was a three times winner for David Easterby. He won twice at Garthorpe and once at Bratton Down. Snake Rave also finished second three times over fences in two Hunter chases and a maiden chase. He is now retired from racing and owned by Ellie Seels. He has a wonderful life and was hunted over the last winter. He has started his eventing career this season and done a bit of showing, and he also does a bit in pony club and loves it. Ellie says "He's an amazing horse to own and everyone who meets him loves him".

Thanks to Ellie for the photo.

Abwab

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Teofilo
Dam: Alaia

Foaled: 2016

Races: 7. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

One of our favourite rehoming tales has to be Abwab.

Abwab was bought out of Sir Michael Stoute’s yard in 2018, having not raced before. He ran seven times (four times on the flat and three over hurdles) but he simply didn’t want to be a racehorse. If a horse doesn’t want to race we will never force it upon them, and instead will find them a new vocation.

Abwab was rehomed with Jodie Smith and has been a revelation in his new career. He has done dressage and jumping and a little bit of cross country. He has also had a hacking holiday around the North York Moors, which isn’t far from where he was trained.

Following in the hoofprints of his illustrious grandfather, the late Galileo, Abwab has also cantered around Epsom racecourse where Galileo won the 2001 Derby.

In the year that Jodie has owned Abwab they have moved from the north to south and back again and now live near Howden in East Yorkshire.

Jodie says "Abwab is barefoot and doing great! He is such a friendly boy and so many people compliment him".

Dee Pee Tee Cee

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Tidaro
Dam: Silver Glimpse

Foaled: 1994

Races: 63. Wins: 13, 2nd: 1, 3rd: 4

Dee Pee Tee Cee raced for his whole career from our yard at Sheriff Hutton.

He arrived from Goffs Sales in Ireland as a foal and he cost just £2,000. He showed plenty of potential at home before he even saw a racecourse and he won on his two year old debut at Redcar in 1996, taking a selling race under jockey Gyles Parkin. Dee Pee Tee Cee quickly established himself as a stable favourite.

He was successful five times as a three year old with wins at Beverley (twice), Carlisle, Redcar and Musselburgh. His best season came in 1999 when he was five, winning six times, including two victories on our home track at York ridden by Terry Lucas.

In total he won 13 races, 11 on the flat and two over hurdles. His final win came over hurdles at Wetherby, and he was retired in 2004.

Tee Cee earned almost £75,000 in prize money during his career which spanned nine seasons.

He retired sound and spent his years off the track with Jane Bedford near Scarborough.

Flockton Tobouggie

99 year old bay gelding

Sire: Tobougg
Dam: Johnson's Point

Foaled: 2006

Races: 7. Wins: 0, 2nd: 0, 3rd: 0

Flockton Tobouggie was bred by my friend Stephen Curtis, out of Johnson's Point who we also trained.

He raced over middle distances and also in bumpers but he was not quick enough to make a racehorse.

Retired in 2010 he now lives with Julie Eccleshall Roberts and she loves him to bits! He is a chunky bay with big feet and no white markings at all. The photo shows him in June 2017 being showed, and he looks a magnificent sight!
