VETERAN racing trainer Mick Easterby is calling for improvements to what he says in an accident blackspot near his yard in Sheriff Hutton.
Mr Easterby, now 85, has trained racehorses at New House Farm for more than 50 years, but is worried about safety on a stretch of road at Bulmer Bank, near to the farm entrance and adjacent to his land.
He says there have been a growing number of accidents on the bank, which is situated on a sharp bend on a steep hill.
He has now introduced his own safety measures, building a large bank of soil, which has been labelled Michael's Mound, to prevent vehicles leaving the road.
"Someone runs through this very steep bank on this bad bend every year," he said.
"I have asked the council to come and look at it for three years now but no-one wants to know about it.
"I understand the council don't have unlimited resources, but something needed to be done before someone got killed so I did that myself.
"I would now like the council to come out and suggest what can be done to make it safer."
He added: "At least once or twice a year, cars are going through it.
"What finished it off for me was when a young fella drove straight through it in his car and smashed into the field.
"I went and pulled him out with the tractor but he did not even put the fence back, there was no thanks, and I have not seen him since."
A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said: "We have looked at the site and decided a vehicle restraint system (safety barrier) is not justified in this location as we need to prioritise their installation based on a number of factors, including the number of collisions resulting in personal injury.
"There has been one minor injury collision recorded here in the past five years.
"However, along with the police, we will look at the site again to see if we can improve the signage leading up to it."
