Name: Michael Friedrich Benedikt Baron von Melas was a Transylvanian-born field marshal for the Austrian Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. He was born in Transylvania in 1729 and served in the Seven Years' War as aide de camp for Leopold Josef Graf Daun. The horse is named as such because Von Melas fought in the Battle of Marengo, the name of the sire.
