Hawcroft made his hurdles debut at Catterick in 1966 and won on his third start under Pete Burnham at odds of 100/6, beating 25/1 shot Devon Way in a huge field of 26 runners. He also ran on the flat and was runner up three times over fences before leaving to go hunter chasing.
