Habbershaw's career didn’t start well as he unseated his rider on his debut at Teesside Park in April. After four unplaced runs Habbershaw finished second at Beverley before I found a little selling race for him at Beverley a week later, a race in which I also ran stablemate Bernadine. The race was the Scarborough Spa Selling Stakes, over five furlongs, on 13th July 1976.
Eddie Hide was booked to ride Habbershaw, sent off the 11/10 favourite. The finish of the race saw Habbershaw and Bernadine battle it out up the Beverley hill with Bernadine, a 7/2 chance and Habbershaw coming off second best by a short head.
Habbershaw ran in the Burns Selling Stakes at Ayr a week later where she turned the race into a procession and scored by five lengths.
