Shergar Cup call-up for Joanna Mason

Shergar Cup call-up for Joanna Mason

The sky’s the limit for Joanna Mason as she was today revealed as one of the riders for the 2022 renewal of the Shergar Cup.

The Shergar Cup meeting is held annually at Ascot Racecourse in early August. The race is named in honour of the 1981 Derby winner Shergar who was killed after being kidnapped by the IRA. It is a team competition, with jockeys invited to join one of four teams, divided by their presenting countries or region, or their gender. The winning team determined by their overall performance across the bumper eight-race card and a silver trophy of Shergar, donated by the Aga Khan, is presented to the winning team.

On the news of her selection this morning Joanna said, "I'm honoured to be picked as part of the girls’ team for the Shergar Cup. They've won it for the last two years so hopefully can continue their good form and I’m glad to be part of the team."

David Easterby also expressed his support for Joanna, who has ridden 12 winners for his yard in 2022.

"It's well deserved", he said this morning. "It goes to prove that hard work and effort does get you where you need to be."

Joanna has had a remarkable time since turning professional at the end of 2020. A former top lady amateur rider, her first winner as a professional came aboard Marwari on New Year’s Eve 2020 and a procession of winners has followed suit.

The 2021 season saw Joanna ride 44 winners, with a further 24 wins coming during the current campaign.
