Veteran campaigner Ring Of Gold is back on familiar terrain on Tuesday as he heads to Southwell, where Joanna Mason takes the ride in his bid to secure a sixth all‑weather victory. Now nine years old, he remains as enthusiastic as ever, and his recent form suggests he is far from finished with the business of winning.

Autumn brought a resurgence, with back‑to‑back successes at Newcastle reminding everyone of the gelding's appetite for competition. His most recent outing, also at Newcastle, saw him beaten only half a length.

The son of Havana Gold will tackle the first division of the Read Meg Nicholls' Blog At betmgm.co.uk Classified Stakes, a race that looks well within his compass if he brings the form that he showed in the autumn. Southwell, however, has been a puzzle for him. The race marks his sixteenth appearance at the Nottinghamshire track, yet a victory there has so far eluded him. Three placed efforts hint that he handles the surface well enough, but the winning thread has stubbornly refused to appear.

Even so, there is a sense that the stars may be aligning. Mason knows him intimately understands exactly how to coax the best from him. Whether this is the day he finally breaks his Southwell duck remains to be seen, but he'll give his running and show why he has become such a durable and likeable presence on the all‑weather scene.

What What What

Joining Ring Of Gold at Southwell is Tomlinson Racing's What What What who tackles the second division of the Midnite Are Upping The Betting Game Handicap. Joanna Mason takes over from Lewis Chalkley as the four-year-old attempts to get back to winning ways. He acts on the track, having run well when third to Fine Claret back in January 2025 and he'll be having just his third start at Southwell.

The race split has remarkably handed our horse what looks the easier half, with all five of the last time out winners being drawn in Division I.

What What What will be making his 20th career start, having recorded one victory and three places. His sole win came at Newcastle in March 2025 under Billy Garritty and this will be only the third time he's been partnered by Joanna Mason.
