Grey Desire was trained at the yard as a two year old. He won three races before leaving to be trained by his owner, Mel Brittain, on gaining a training licence.

He made his debut in the Oakeley Vaughan Selling Stakes at York in June 1982, and continually improving he won at Edinburgh, Beverley and Redcar. His win at Beverley saw him land a gamble, backed from 33-1 to 16-1 before obliging. He cantered in by three lengths to beat the 1-2 favourite, the unbeaten Return to Paris, trained by Henry Cecil.
