Stable apprentice Lewis Chalkley rode his first winner this afternoon when Refuge won the 'Selecta Systems Apprentice Training Series Handicap' at Haydock Park. The pair won from the front as Refuge stayed on well to hold off the chasing pack and land the odds at 15/2.

"It's amazing. First winner, can't beat this feeling", said Lewis after the race. "There wasn't a lot of pace in the race and I thought I'd make it and it worked out!"

"I'm not from a racing background. I'm originally from Barnsley from a coal mining family. I didn't sit on a horse until I was 17 and I'm only 21 now."

Lewis was having just his fifth ride and this will be the start of an exciting career.

We are sure he will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jimmy Sullivan, Paul Mulrennan, Nathan Evans and Harrison Shaw who were apprentices here and have become successful jockeys in recent years.

Prior to today's race Refuge had won five races, all of which had been in Scotland, but Lewis persuaded the son of Harbour Watch to put his best foot forward south of the border this afternoon.

Refuge was carrying the colours of the Laura Mason Syndicate and there are a few places still available for new members.
