The Markel Jockeys Jumping event sees jockeys complete a round of show jumps and it's one of the highlights of the annual London International Horse Show. The event features record-breaking former jump jockey Sir Anthony McCoy together with current stars Brian Hughes, Harry Skelton and Harry Cobden who can all be seen turning their hand to show jumping. The class will run with one rider from each team in the arena at a time, alternating turns, and with riders facing time penalties of three seconds for every fence knocked down, the stakes are high in this fast-paced contest. The crowd-favourite Markel Joker fence, which made it's debut in 2022, will once again feature as the final jump. Jockeys can choose whether to jump the Joker after completing their round, knowing that a successful clear will subtract four seconds from their time, while failure will result in an additional four second penalty. But the highlight of the evening for us is the appearance of Joanna. Jo's had a brilliant season, riding a personal best 63 winners, and her career has gone from strength to strength since turning pro at the end of 2020. "I really enjoy the event", said Joanna this afternoon. "It's very competitive but also raises funds and awareness for a charity that is close to all of our hearts. I'll be doing my very best to beat the clock and hopefully the team can win this year. Jockeys are a competitive bunch and everyone wants to win." You can watch live on Friday 20th December at 6.40pm on BBC red button. We'll all be cheering Joanna on and we hope you can join us! |
