Master Sheridan climbs Askham Fell

Hikers climbing Askham Fell yesterday will have perhaps been surprised to meet one of our ex-racehorses at the summit!

It was a year to the day since Master Sheridan, known to us as Boris, departed New House Farm for the final time to begin his new life in the Lake District. And to mark the occasion owner Holly Robinson gave him a day to remember by taking him for a spectacular hack to enjoy one of Lakeland's most stunning vistas.

Situated to the east of Ullswater, Askham Fell stands 320 metres above sea level and has beautiful views of the mountains and lake. It's a lovely track for scenic ride and Boris enjoyed his outing on a perfect day with cotton wool clouds dotted across the blue sky and a gentle breeze blowing.

Boris is a regular on the bridleways and tracks of the eastern Lake District and has done many hacks in the clean fresh air with Holly. It's a fabulous part of the country to enjoy life after racing and Boris is visiting places that very few ex-racehorses ever go! We are pretty sure that this is the first time one of our ex-racehorses has ever scaled the summit of Askham Fell.

Running under the name 'Master Sheridan' the John Blackburn-owned son of Farhh raced five times but didn't have the pace to be a winner. His final outing saw him finish last at Catterick, after which we decided to retire him as he clearly wasn't enjoying what he was doing.

Now thriving out of racing, Boris hasn't looked back since leaving Sheriff Hutton and early mornings on the gallops are now but a distant memory.

Boris has become a real all-rounder and has also done a spot of cross country training this summer.

"When he did cross country he was fired up at first. There was a lot of excited dancing on the spot but after a good gallop out he soon settled down and was jumping lovely. He really enjoyed himself!" said Holly.

"He took it in his stride and he did me very proud! I was so pleased with him. He certainly is some horse!"

The route to Askham Fell

As a postscript, we were contacted by Joanne Bowness who tells us of another thoroughbred who has scaled Askham Fell. Joanne lives in the same village as Holly and Gill!

"Many moons ago, I was fortunate enough to become the owner of Jalmusique, Jennifer Pallister's chestnut gelding," says Jennifer. "An eight time winner trained by Peter Easterby, I jumped him up to foxhunter and did a bit of eventing and lots of galloping up Askham Fell! He was fantastic!!"
