Yorkshire Lady bounced back to form this afternoon at Windsor where she took the Windsor Oktoberfest Handicap at odds of 25/1. Clifford Lee was the winning rider having replaced Joanna Mason who missed her rides at Windsor due to illness.
After being prominent throughout, Yorkshire Lady raced on the far side in the home straight, going second a furlong out and hitting the front in the final half furlong. She was always doing enough to finish a length ahead of runner up Likealot.
Yorkshire Lady was only the fourth winner for the stable at the Berkshire track with Itlaaq, Perfect Pasture and Hoofalong the horses to have recorded wins at Windsor previously.
The victory takes the seven-year-old grey past the £100,000 prizemoney landmark having now won eight races. A horse who comes into her own in late summer, four of her eight wins have been in September.
"I'm delighted for her", said Yorkshire Lady's regular jockey Joanna Mason, who was obviously disappointed to have missed the ride. "Last time I rode her I said she was crying out for a mile and a half and grandad backed me. She went to Windsor for the soft ground and we knew she'd love it."
"I'm gutted to miss the ride. But I feel horrendous and I don't think I could have ridden a finish on her the way I feel right now."
Yorkshire Lady was originally owned by our friend the late Linda Folwell. Linda loved her racing and she'll be in our thoughts today after a win for the horse she named and loved.
