Beverley Racecourse lies on Beverley Westwood, just outside the market town, and has staged racing for more than three centuries. Its origins go back to 1690, with formal recognition following the founding of the Jockey Club in 1752. An annual meeting was established in 1767, the same year the first grandstand was built at a cost of £1,000.
Racing paused during wartime, most notably between 1915 and 1920 when the Royal Flying Corps and later the RAF used the site as an aerodrome. After the Second World War the course resumed its steady development, eventually adding new stands in the 1960s and later pursuing phased refurbishment rather than full redevelopment.
The track is a right‑handed oval a little over a mile and three furlongs, generally galloping in nature but with a stiff uphill finish and tight turns. The five‑furlong course is famous for one of the strongest draw biases in Britain, with low numbers on the inside rail enjoying a marked advantage because the ground falls away to the left and the straight bends slightly right halfway.
Beverley's modern programme includes two Listed races: the Charlie Wood Stakes over a mile and four furlongs in July, and the Beverley Bullet Sprint over five furlongs in August. The Hilary Needler Trophy for juveniles is another long‑established feature, with notable winners such as Attraction. The course typically stages around nineteen fixtures a year and maintains a reputation for being friendly, accessible and rooted in its local community.
