At the end of 1969 I bought a horse by the name of Gay Perch from Barry Hills, who was in his first year as a trainer. The horse had given Barry four wins in his rookie season and I think he regretted letting the horse go, and I had bought him to run over hurdles. Gay Perch won first time up over hurdles at Sedgefield in March and then won on the flat at Thirsk. Gay Perch was also beaten twice in photo finishes at Beverley and York! Barry Hills actually bought the horse back before the year was out, I think he was sentimentally attached to him, but it took Barry a while to get him to win again.
